Jamaica Comes to DBSC”

As Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley’s “One Love-One Heart” proclaimed “let’s get together and feel alright.” Well, that’s exactly how our members and guests felt after they experienced a morning presentation, authentic Jamaican meal and guest appearance at our Virtual Trip to Jamaica on July 27th.  We started the day with a wonderful presentation by DBSC member Sylvester Durrant who grew up in Kingston which is the capital and largest city in Jamaica. He brought in an interesting assortment of traditional foods as well as artifacts from his homeland.  Following the presentation, our members were served a delicious meal of Jamaican curry chicken, rice and beans, beef patties, cabbage and carrots and Jamaican hard dough bread. (This specialty bread was brought in by Sylvester from a Jamaican bakery.) Although there was no room left, we somehow managed to squeeze in DBSC social worker Edna Dormer’s Carrot Cake.  This cake, which is well known to all members and staff, contains fresh shredded carrots, raisins, port wine and is covered with a delectable cream cheese frosting.  Edna is also Jamaican and is from Saint Catherine, whose capital, Spanish Town, was the first capital in Jamaica.

We finished our virtual trip with a visit from Eon Bailey whose show “Roots and Culture” airs on Channel 18 every Sunday morning from 7:00am-8:00am. Eon, a friend of our chef, hails from Port Antonia, Jamaica and gave us additional facts on the country’s culture and values.  He was truly inspirational.

Join us on August 17th as we travel to Sicily, Italy.  We’ll be dining on Penne with Puttanesca Sauce, Sicilian Chick Pea Salad, Broccoli Rabe, Focaccia Bread and a traditional Italian dessert. Let’s “mangia” together!
